Sometimes, Claire glimpsed a world hidden away behind her thoughts. Back there, in the shadows, were those lurking creatures she tried not to think about too often. She knew those dark creatures hid in the shadows behind her. Occasionally, she saw flickers in mirrors and reflected back from the glass she brought up to her lips. Often, it was nothing more than an undulation of a shadow’s edge that she easily dismissed as a trick of the light.
Deep down, though, she knew the creatures of the shadows were lurking there, and that they had all the time in the world to wait. They had been waiting for humankind, ever since our time began, and they would still be here long after the universe forgot the legend of the human race.
Back when humanity was young, these creatures of the shadowed edges were spirits, demons, gods and all those other fates, fears and malevolences that lurked out beyond human control. They were the ghosts, goblins, elves and other such creatures, lurking in the shadows, waiting for the unwary to step on that deeper patch of darkness. A place that was no ordinary shadow; but a place that tore life screaming from the one who took that one step too far.
